I came to the shakuhachi because I was attracted to its timbre. This is also the reason for why I play jinashi shakuhachi. However, once you embark on the journey of learning honkyoku – the repertoire of the Zen Buddhist monks komusō – it is hard not to somehow relate to meditation. Thus althuogh this was not my entry to shakuhachi, it certainly became important for me.
I have for years trained shakuhachi playing and meditation, which is not an easy task to do simultaneously. I have a diary in which I note my daily sessions on shakuhachi and meditation.
